Waterstone’s Commitment to Sustainable Practices

We at Waterstone pride ourselves on our inherent will to protect the environment with sustainable, green manufacturing processes. From the beginning, our goal has always been to create the highest quality plumbing products without prioritizing profit over the planet. Waterstone is keenly aware of the effects that many industrial manufacturing processes have on our ailing environment. As a result, our owner and CEO, Chris Kuran, has made it a point to ensure that Waterstone leads the industry in green and sustainable methods. Kuran attended the United State Naval Academy and served in the US Marines, where he became intimately familiar with ocean and its many essential functions. He garnered a love for the sea that not only motivated him to protect it, but continues to inspire product design and development. To this day, Chris Kuran and his family find immense joy in the captivating beauty of the Pacific Ocean and its scenic coastlines.   Chris Kuran and the Waterstone team understand that small manufacturers play an enormous role in not only setting an example of green, sustainable, manufacturing practices for other companies, but also in helping to preserve and protect our planet’s resources. Due to the clear environmental impact of larger companies that produce carbon emissions and toxic waste, the impact of the net sum of pollutants contributed by smaller manufacturers is often overlooked.  With a corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in Southern California, Waterstone happily abides by California’s environmentally conscious manufacturing code. In fact, California manufacturers like us comply with the most stringent environmental regulations in the United States. However, many of the practices required by law have been part of Waterstone’s ethos since our inception – ensuring that every resource is used, re-used, and recycled or disposed of ethically. Our products comply with Cal-Green (California Green Building Standards Code), CEC (California Energy Commission), and meet or exceed NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) standards.    A Focus on Green Manufacturing   Waterstone prioritizes the environment in a multitude of ways, many of which are observed within our meticulous manufacturing methods. At our manufacturing facility in Murrieta, California, we use CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machining to maximize efficiency and when buying new CNC and polishing equipment, we utilize 480-volt machinery, which consumes less energy and results in the same quality. Waterstone also uses low toxicity plating, polishing, finishing and coatings. We employ the Trivalent Chrome plating process, which is less toxic and more environmentally friendly than traditional hexavalent chrome plating.    Recycling and Responsible Waste Management   We proudly practice a zero-waste process; nothing goes down the drain. All liquid waste from our finishing and CNC processes is reduced through an evaporative technique and is then handed off for treatment and processing by qualified companies. Even our testing stations utilize water that is filtered and recycled.  Our manufacturing process results in brass shavings, which we melt down and recycle. In fact, we recycle 99% of our brass and steel chips. Used parts are also recycled with care. Our thoughtful approach to recycling and disposal minimizes heavy metal waste and conserves energy and is a large part of what makes our process sustainable.    Green Earth, Clean Air   We take a number of measures to minimize our carbon footprint as we manufacture and distribute our products. All Waterstone brass and Stainless Steel is purchased from American distributors, so our materials aren’t shipped exorbitant distances. For years, we have given our customers the option to bundle their products into one box, made to fit a full faucet suite. This practice enables us to minimize shipments (and therefore carbon emissions) and reduce the volume of packaging materials that are sent for further recycling, or worse, sent to a land fill.   Sustainabile Packaging   It’s not just our packaging and shipping process that supports our green cause; our packaging material also goes the extra mile. Waterstone’s packaging is made from 70/30 material, meaning that it is made from 70% recycled material combined with 30% virgin material. The foam inserts that protect our products during distribution are made of recyclable urethane material. Once recycled, the urethane becomes a necessary component and is used to make hundreds of other products including mattresses, carpet padding, exercise mats, or sneakers. Recently, we have implemented a sustainability best-practice by minimizing ink and color-coating of our packaging, opting instead to leave the cardboard its natural color.  As Waterstone continues to grow and produce artisanal, one-of-a-kind fixtures, so does our potential footprint. Now, more than ever, we are pushing upward with our best foot forward. We aim to ensure that our manufacturing processes, distribution methods, and product attributes respect the Earth, as well as protect water quality. Waterstone will continue to find ways to reduce waste and emissions, ensure that our brass is of the highest standard, and fight for a cleaner and greener community.   Due to our consistent growth we have had to increase our factory square footage, and then once again, add more office space. Each time we grow we do so in an energy efficient manner. All new appliances and air conditioning are Energy Star compliant, all lighting is LED, bathroom fixtures are water conserving and meet California low flow standards. At Waterstone we consistently look for ways to reduce our energy footprint while improving our facilities.  We at Waterstone want to emphasize that we take our conservation and environmentally-focused efforts seriously, and we hope you do too.

How a SBA Real Estate Loan Gave Waterstone a Competitive Edge

By Lily Rutman In the much-earlier days of Calif.-based company Waterstone Faucets, a banker told founder Chris Kuran something entrepreneurs tend to hear often: You’re probably not going to make it. “I had been told by a bank, ‘You’re under-capitalized… we don’t think you’re going to succeed,” said Kuran, recalling when he tried to get conventional bank financing many years ago. A U.S. Naval Academy grad and Marine Corps veteran, Kuran has never been known to be a quitter. With some help from two SBA loans, he has since grown Waterstone Faucets into a leader in high-end kitchen faucets in the nation, attracting the business of the well-heeled and well-known. The more recent SBA loan was 504 real estate financing provided by CDC Small Business Finance, with the help of senior loan officer Merri Adams. Now in its 20th year in business, the U.S. manufacturer employs more than 140 people, pumping economic activity into their home base of Murrieta, Calif. “We figured out a way to just get it done; we don’t quit,” said Kuran, as he walked among the heavy hum of faucet production at his 42,000-square-foot manufacturing plant on a recent weekday. MAKING THE BEST FAUCETS IN THE WORLD Founded by Kuran in 1999, Waterstone Faucets was at first in the business of selling parts and finished components to large filtration companies that made and sold drinking water systems. After clients asked Waterstone to make small institutional drinking water faucets in custom finishes, that’s when Kuran spotted a niche opportunity. Waterstone pivoted toward the production of top-notch filtration faucets in several finishes, and in 2005, Waterstone added kitchen faucets to its line-up. Since that pivot, Kuran — with business partner and Vice President of Manufacturing Steve Kliewer who joined in 2001 — has been laser-focused on “making the best faucet in the world,” he said. COMMITMENT TO MADE IN THE U.S.A., EXPANSION Today, Kuran is proud of the fact every single faucet is made by machine and hand from start to finish at the Murrieta production plant. “When we started I knew I wanted a product that was made in the U.S.,” Kuran said. Everything from plating to curing to polishing is all done inside the 42,000-square-foot facility, which Kuran purchased in 2014 with an SBA 504 loan through CDC Small Business Finance. (They were originally under a lease agreement with an option to purchase the facility.) Waterstone’s previous digs were significantly smaller, at 13,000 square feet. Why move into a space more than three times the size? Kuran and his team wanted to bring the faucet finishing work in-house, which required more room for machinery and workers. They had previously contracted out the finishing work. So by bringing that function in house, Waterstone was able to control both cost and quality. Demand for Waterstone products has only accelerated since moving to the new space, thanks largely to word-of-mouth referrals from architects and high-end home designers. To meet demand, they’ve since brought on new machinery to increase capacity and switched to a “lean” production system that allows every team member to easily visualize where components are in the production line, which has increased efficiency. In all, they track about 750 components, so the lean system has proven to be invaluable, Kuran said. HOW AN SBA 504 LOAN PAVED THE WAY FOR GROWTH After realizing buying commercial property would be advantageous, Waterstone explored doing so with the help of an SBA 504 loan. It’s financing for real estate and major equipment that comes with a rate that’s fixed and affordable. Perhaps the best part: You only need to put 10 percent down. Getting an SBA 504 loan provided Kuran and his company several benefits including: Savings: His mortgage was less than what he paid in rent. Stable monthly payments: SBA 504 rates are fixed so you know exactly what you’ll owe every month. No surprises. Investing in your future. You are building equity in your own asset. “It was the edge we needed,” Kuran said. “I’m living proof that SBA loans do help small business entrepreneurs get off the ground.” Merri Adams, a senior loan officer at CDC Small Business Finance, helped Waterstone get their SBA 504 loan. “Using the SBA 504 loan program, they purchased the building with 10% down and leveraged a low fixed rate,” Adams said. “The low fixed rate translates into stable monthly payments that do not increase over time, driving increased profitability and stability for companies.” “It’s a labor of love,” Kuran said. HOW CDC HELPED Provided SBA 504 loan to buy 42,000-square-foot building in Murrieta, Calif. Loan provided an affordable, fixed rate for stable monthly payments. Mortgage was less than what the borrower had been paying in rent. Pave the way for hiring, with total employee count at 145. WHAT’S NEXT FOR WATERSTONE FAUCETS? Now that Waterstone has a strong foothold on the luxe kitchen-faucet market, they’ve got their sights set on a bathroom line. They’re currently working on the new designs, which are slated to go live around 2020. Waterstone Faucets’ expansive building houses its production, warehouse and offices in Murrieta, Calif.

Waterstone Made in the USA

U.S. Products – Is it Really Made In America?

Made in America? Since the 1970’s, the U.S. production of American Made and manufactured goods has been steadily on the decline. This drop-off, has come from the mass of cheaper overseas products that have flooded U.S. markets. This has made it difficult for consumers to find truly made in America products. U.S. businesses have recognized the importance of claiming “Made in America.” That title automatically buys them prestige in the market and into American homes. U.S. shoppers would rather buy American Made, but manufacturing here is more difficult and expensive. That makes true American made products hard to find. Unfortunately, there is a shady little work around that can get your product labeled “Made in the USA.” It is a dirty little secret and businesses are pulling the wool over Americans eyes. They are telling little white lies to profit on good intentions. So, What’s Going On? Here’s the problem: Many American based businesses are recognizing the importance of being American Made. However, they don’t want to have to jump over the difficult hurdles of actually manufacturing here in the States. So, here is the deception. All an American manufacturer has to do is buy pre-made product from overseas, ship it to the U.S., assemble it, package it, and then claim that it’s “American Made.” However, the product itself is made from overseas materials, manufactured by overseas factories, and gives the majority of the jobs to people overseas! These companies are able to claim the “American Made” title because at the very last stage of the process, American workers handled the product. What they should be claiming is that their product is “American Assembled.” Some do, but the majority prefer to take advantage of the legal loophole and leave their customers believing a false truth. Why is no One Stopping This? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the group that monitors the American Made claims and is charged with preventing deception and unfairness in the marketplace. However, the law that allows them to enforce companies to show where their U.S. content was created is only applied to automobiles, textile, wool, and fur products. There is no law that requires other products sold in the U.S. to be marked or labeled Made in USA correctly. There is no rule against having any other disclosure about their amount of U.S. content. This allows companies to falsely advertise “Made in America,” when in reality they aren’t. By buying all of their product overseas they are sending away jobs and the ability to grow America’s manufacturing economy. Why Does it Matter? You may be wondering: “OK, so why does any of this matter?” When businesses decide to take the easy and cheap route of buying and shipping from overseas, they are creating a couple of different problems. Job Loss By manufacturing overseas, companies are shrinking the jobs for future generations and limiting America’s independence. When we start to diminish the amount of manufacturing businesses, you are diminishing job opportunities for hard working U.S. citizens and giving them to people overseas. This also causes Americans to have to rely on those overseas countries for supplies, limiting our economic independence. Pollution U.S. manufacturers that go overseas are hurting our environment. The amount of pollution coming from foreign factories is enormous. From the mining of materials, the coal supplied power, the factories themselves and then the cargo ships that bring the product over here. Many of the countries these products are shipped from don’t have a government that enforces pollution regulation. Here in the United States, we have strict pollution regulations so that our air will stay clean. Overseas, that doesn’t always exist. Foreign Labor Standards Overseas manufacturers are not acknowledging foreign labor standards. The reality is that in many countries there are no foreign labor standards. Children to elderly are forced to work long hours in unprotected environments for almost no pay. You may think “That’s not fair!” but every time you buy something made overseas, there is a good chance you are adding fuel to the fire to that situation. Poor working conditions mixed with the poor pollution leads to poor lives and we are enabling it. Quality of Goods Overseas manufacturers are claiming that their products are up to American standards, but the majority of the time, they are not. When you buy America made products, you expect to get high quality. Businesses that make that claim and then produce low quality, inferior products are dragging America’s reputation through the dirt. How to Spot the Lie: If you want to buy truly Made in the USA products there are a few ways to make sure you are buying the genuine thing. First go and check out their website, if they claim to be American Made look at the fine print. A lot of times they will double back and say American Assembled instead. If it seems unclear, give the company a call and specifically ask if they are American Manufactured or just American Assembled. If they still claim to be American Made feel free to ask them where their manufacturing plant is in America, or which American business they source their materials from. A good example of truly Made in America company is Waterstone Faucets. We design, engineer, manufacture and assemble all of our parts here in Murrieta, California. For materials, we purchase brass and stainless steel from Chase Mills in Ohio. There are a few smaller parts we have to buy from overseas. Like plastic O-rings to secure water leakage. We would happily buy that O-ring from an U.S. business, but because of the decline in American manufacturing, there is no one in the States that makes what we need. Although we do use foreign O-rings, 99.5% of our faucets and accessories are manufactured in the U.S.A. We are qualified by the FTC to claim we are Made in America. If other businesses can’t answer those questions for you, then you probably have a bogus business on your hands. So, the next

Waterstone Eco Brass

Get the Lead Out! Eco Brass Keeps Drinking Water Safe

Waterstone – Lead Free Down to the Core Here at Waterstone, we strive to produce the highest quality faucets in the market. We understand the importance of using Eco-friendly materials to ensure the utmost safety and happiness to our customers. In order to guarantee the satisfaction of our customers, we use a lead free Eco Brass supplied by an American mill – Chase Brass in Ohio. Lead Free Eco Brass is different from regular brass in that it is required to meet a higher standard of excellence. Many times regular brass can include chemicals and metals that aren’t safe for human consumption. Lead Free Eco Brass upholds the standard of excellence by removing all of those chemicals and metals. Eco Brass is NSF 14 Compliant: Approved by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) and is not only Lead free but also Arsenic and Bismuth free. As well as being Lead free, Bismuth free, and Arsenic free, Eco Brass is also corrosion resistant to chemicals found in water and gas. It is also resistant to boiler and pressure vessel code registered alloy. Which means that it won’t break down under the constant flow of water, hot or cold. Eco Brass has the strength equivalent to Stainless Steel and it won’t get brittle at high temperatures. It is the highest quality brass in the market, and even though you may not notice, Waterstone cares enough to make sure that you don’t have too. We have your safety and longevity at heart when we choose to make our faucets from the highest quality materials. Waterstone Faucets are excellence to their core, quite literally! Lead Free: Why does it matter to be Lead free? Studies have shown that regular consumption of small amounts of lead can lead to lead toxicity. So, let’s say you buy a faucet that contains lead in the inner workings. If you drink water from that faucet, over a certain amount of time you are going to be exposed to possible lead toxicity. Lead toxicity can cause abdominal pain, cramps, aggressive behavior, sleep problems, headaches, loss of appetite, fatigue, high blood pressure, numbness or tingling in the extremities, memory loss, anemia, kidney dysfunction and most importantly, loss of developmental skills in children. If you want to keep your family safe, Lead Free Eco Brass is the way to go. Arsenic Free: Like Lead, Arsenic is not something that you want to be ingesting regularly. Arsenic is a natural metalloid chemical that may be present in groundwater. Ingestion only poses health problems if a dangerous amount of arsenic enters the body. Then, it can lead to cancer, liver disease, coma, and death. Bismuth Free: Bismuth can often be found in unclean brass. While many people will tell you that bismuth is non-toxic in small amounts, sufficient exposure can produce nausea, headache, diarrhea, and pain. About Chase Brass Chase Brass and Copper Company traces its origin back to 1837, and today is recognized as one of the most efficient brass rod mills in North America. Waterstone Kanban lean manufacturing
Company News, Manufacturing

Kanban: Crazy Complex or Super Simple?

Story and illustrations by Mackenzie Manley What is it? Lean manufacturing is manufacturing in its most simple, elegant form. Inspired by Toyota’s Production System, Lean employs pull systems and visual tools to align efforts across the organization which helps to drive out waste and inefficiencies. One such tool, called Kanban (meaning “card, or signal”) was inspired by the shelf restocking process in Super Markets – what is sold is quickly restocked. Toyota adapted this process to its factories and supply chain, and others successful manufacturers, including Waterstone Faucets, have followed suit. So How Exactly Does it Work? The best way to think about Kanban is to look at it like a Pull System. When you need an individual part you “pull” it from the bins that has been labeled specifically for that part. The bins have been stocked with exactly the amount you need that day to create products. A creative example of a Kanban system or lean manufacturing system is your local burrito joint! Let’s look at the process step by step: Step 1. Let’s say you are on your lunch break and craving a delicious burrito. The burrito shop you prefer happens to make the burritos in front of you and allows you to choose your own ingredients. There are many ingredients to choose from and each bin holding the ingredient is stored in its’ own bin. The bins are not very large, they probably have enough ingredients to last through the lunch rush. Step 2. As you choose your ingredients, Mike the burrito maker grabs each ingredient (or part) that he needs to complete your burrito (or product). Some of the ingredients are low in the bins but as you come to the cheese, Mike realizes that the cheese has ran out.     Step 3. Mike takes the empty cheese bin back into the kitchen and exchanges it for a full bin of cheese. That full bin of cheese was prepared by Mike, who was noticed several customers earlier that the cheese bin was running low. Mike was able to quickly shred the cheese to fill the bin because the cheese, cheese shredder, and gloves are all kept in the kitchen in the exact same spots to help Mike find the tools he needs to shred the cheese quickly.     Step 4. Mike takes the cheese container back, replacing it where it belongs and continues on with creating the burrito. Once you have chosen all of your ingredients, Mike wraps the burrito and places it in a container for you to take back to work. The transaction for the burrito is placed and you are pleased that the order was completed quickly and accurately!     The Kanban System at Waterstone: Just like a Burrito shop, Waterstone utilizes this Kanban system in their inventory system. Instead of bins of ingredients, Waterstone has bins of faucet parts. All of the parts are milled in our factory in Southern California so that the bins can be replenished when they run out. When the customer orders the faucet or suite they desire, then the Kanban or lean manufacturing system starts up. Waterstone also incorporates the practice of organization. Every tool has its own place, and a well organized shop helps to encourage a more efficient and faster production rate so that you can get what you ordered faster! Waterstone’s president Chris Kuran was hesitant to make that jump from the complex system that Waterstone had been using to the simpler Kanban or lean manufacturing system. “I didn’t realize that there was an easier and better way to run the inventory system. When I learned about the benefits of Kanban , I knew that it would be the right fit for Waterstone since we are a smaller business and produce everything here in our own factory.” The Kanban system solved a very complex problem with a very simple solution. Waterstone has taken advantage of the Japanese wisdom to solve our own big problems, but Kanban can also be used on a much smaller scale, perhaps even in your own kitchen! Stick around and soon you will find out how using the Kanban system (with Waterstone’s help) can simplify your own kitchen experience!

Waterstone Classic Bronze Finish
Company News, Kitchen Design, Manufacturing, Product

Waterstone Adds a 30th Finish – Classic Bronze

Waterstone is proud to announce our newest addition to our finish collection – Classic Bronze. The 30th finish in our faucet line, Classic Bronze will add a warmth and charm to any kitchen design. Waterstone has always kept on top of kitchen trends and the market has asked for this new color tint. “This will be the hot finish for 2018,” says Darcy Kuran, Southern California Sales Rep. “Kitchen designers and home owners want to bring in earth tones and warm hues to their home. Since the kitchen is the most used room in the home, we want to enhance these designs by offering an elegant finish on a beautiful faucet.” When it comes to a particular look, architects, kitchen designers and DIY home owners demand authenticity. We have provided a new hue that will help recreate that early American style and will bring a timeless beauty to any traditional or contemporary kitchen. Classic Bronze is a perfect choice for someone who needs a finish between the shine of a Satin Brass and the darker patina of a Antique Bronze. The early days in America history was a simple time, but it’s color palettes are still influencing us in the modern world. Our Classic Bronze finish was inspired by the spirit of our forefathers and their love of warm and rich earth tones. A spirit shared by us at Waterstone and is reflected in our American made faucet designs. We looked at historical palettes that are based on earth tints, sourced either from iron oxide or copper. Then fused these tints  to create a warm hue familiar to us from early American applications – brown, burnt orange, ochre, umber, and sienna. At Waterstone, we have blended art and technology to create one of the most beautiful finishes in our product line. A timeless look that will warm your home and bring the history of America right into your kitchen.
